The Work

Land, light, and the spaces between

A collection of landscapes made across west-central Minnesota and beyond. Shot from the ground and above, at first light and last.

artist statement

These places hold time differently. Standing in them, it stretches and compresses. Infinite and fleeting in the same breath. I capture that feeling. Not the land itself, but what the place does to you when you take a moment to be present.

about

Lee Smalt is a photographer and multimedia artist based in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. He grew up immersed in music and community, and that sense of shared experience has shaped everything he makes. Self-taught across every creative discipline he has picked up, he came to photography in 2016 and aerial work in 2017, building a practice that moves between the ground and the sky.

He moved to Fergus Falls in 2021 and has since become an active participant in the local arts community, working alongside other artists and organizations to keep creative work visible, accessible, and rooted in the places and people that give it meaning.
